The Open Hands 2010 Trip to Haiti

Jon-David Hawks For the first time, a physical therapist led a wheelchair-bound group class with some of the patients, leading them in stretching and muscle-building activities. Then, in the midst of the very tight and crowded rows of patients, she led them in a race around the tent in their wheelchairs! The jubilance in their spirits and immense joy on their faces beamed “HOPE!” and brought tears to my eyes.

Jon-David Hawks

Jon-David Hawks Great part of the day was sharing Scipture with and disciplining Wilner, a Haitian guy who interprets for us. He pulled me aside and said he wants to grow in his walk with Jesus. So, after my work day I give him a passage which he reads from his girlfriend’s Bible. Then we discuss it the next day! Katie Couric joki…ng with me today doesn’t even come close to this!

God is and has been so faithful. things are really going well down here. i’m heading up the wound care, giving a ton of much needed organization and admin to it, coordinating schedules with surgery, as well as, giving seemingly endless patient care to both inpatient and outpatients. super long days.

I’m working with a physical therapist from texas who specializes in wound care. i’m learning a ton of new techniques and really becoming specialized. great nurses and doctors to work with. the biggest blessing of all and sweetest part of each day is working with, caring for, and loving these haitians.

Not only the patients, but also many workers have become so dear to me, and i’m pretty sure, i to some of them. i want to write so much more, but am dog tired. oh yeah, katie couric will be here tomorow, weds, televising live. look for me :) her film crew was here on saturday and took some footage of me doing wound care.

Some Haiti Team 6 updates: Joel has three solid re-building project proposals he’s worked on this week– they’re all connected with local Haitian ministries who are trying to care for the rising number of earthquake orphans.

Kadi & Courtney have spent their first week working night shifts in the pediatric tent. Hospital has been understaffed all week & they had very few additional people come in this weekend, so looks to be quite a busy week ahead for everyone. They’re taking a needed day off today. In other news, JD was put in charge of Wound Care for the hospital. Way to go team 6!
